Bird
Friendly™
Your friends will be straight up crazed
with your bird friendly™ coffees. The beans
for these javas are grown under a canopy
of shade where the fab tropical and migratory
birds live. To make sure these coffee farms
are legit, the Smithsonian Migratory Bird
Center – aka the SMBC – has strict
criteria for evaluating these farms. Not
only do the farmers have to protect the birds,
but they also have to meet specific organic
certification standards. Just when you think
these coffees can’t get any better,
you find out that the companies who sell
bird friendly™ coffee also contribute
25 cents per pound to support SMBC research
and conservation programs. Nothin’ like
giving a little when you’re getting
a little!
Fair Trade
Looking for a snappy way to show you care?
Check out the buzz on Fair Trade coffees
and teas. While you’re stateside trying
to be glam, other people can have it rough.
Stocking up on Fair Trade stuff helps you
make a difference. Fair Trade promises to
deliver a living wage to farmers for their
harvests, while providing access to affordable
credit services.To
help keep the Earth green, Fair Trade producers
promote sustainable practices, like organic
farming. To be considered “Certified
Fair Trade,” coffees and teas have to
meet certain specs set up by TransFairUSA,
who monitors the coffee chain of command from
the producer to the importer to the roaster.
Certified Organic
If you truly want to be stylin’, you
need to jive with Certified Organic products.
These products view the farm as an ecosystem,
stressing recycling, composting, soil health
and biological activity. Only products
meeting the organic foods production, processing and
handling criteria can be deemed worthy
of USDA Certification. Other products that haven’t
met the certification requirements can
be labeled as “organic,” “made with
organic ingredients,” or “100%
Organic.” You don’t have to
be super granola to show you care about
the environment,
just try some USDA Certified Organic coffee! Our
roasting plant is certified as an organic
processor by the North Carolina Crop Improvement
Association.
